Project Hair tie
Our assignment was to come up with and plan out ideas that would help to solve a world problem that is currently happening. While sadly, there are many to choose from, our group decided to focus on a problem that, is admittedly less dire than others, but also quite relevant for about half the world's population-hairbands. Yes, I am speaking of those band on wrists or the things scattered on most girls bathroom floors. Most of us haven’t put a lot of thought into those little things, but when you do, your may realize that they can be quite irritating. I have never come across one that has lasted long without snapping or stretching, not pulled out my hair, or stayed snugly. In gaining a good quality about a hair tie, you have to sacrifice another. We wanted to make a new kind of hair band that had all of the ideal qualities and none of the sacrifices.
We brainstormed and tested new and existing materials, before deciding on a silicone elastic band covered in woven cotton thread. This turned out to be a great mix because the silicone is much more resistant to snapping and stretching, so the tie count fit snugly into the hair. The cotton thread kepted hair from being pulled out while also adding extra grip. This is because as the hair tie is stretched out in order to be wrapped around the ponytail that strands or thread separate and once it is placed they clamp down on small sections of hair. This ended up creating a very well designed hair tie that is comfortable to wear but also reliable and long lasting.
I think our group was very cohesive throughout the project. I think we all we comfortable to voice our ideas and opinions and talk about ways to improve our plan. This made working on this project enjoyable and interesting. There were times when I believe we could have been more productive, and that would have saved us last minute stress, but for the most part I think we worked well as a group and learned both about seemingly every aspect of hair ties there is, and about collaboration and leadership.
